26 years of shaping cane by hand

Rattan reaches our workshop as raw natural cane. It is graded, soaked until it will bend without splitting, then cut to length. From that point on, every step is done by hand: the frame is bent and lashed, the weave is drawn tight row by row, joints are bound, and the piece is trimmed, smoothed and finished.

There is no machine anywhere in that sequence. That is not nostalgia — it is what the material needs. Cane has a grain and a memory, and it holds its shape only if it is worked while it is ready and bound by someone who can feel the tension.

The result is furniture that flexes instead of cracking, stays cool in a Tamil Nadu summer, and takes decades of daily use. It also means no two pieces are identical. A slight difference in colour or weave is the signature of the person who made it.
